Summary of 2001 projects NEATH ABBEY 11 Longford
Road, Neath
NGR: SS 7374 9771
Three evaluation trenches were excavated prior to
determination of a planning application for the
construction of a bungalow and garage. No features or
deposits earlier than the 18th century were present. Part
of a stone building of late 18th or early 19th century
date was revealed. It had two compartments, separated by
a thick cross wall, one of which had been limewashed many
times. The function of the building is unknown. Elsewhere
on the site were fragmentary remains of a 19th century
floor but as there was no associated walling this may
have been an external surface. The only other features
were an 18th century drainage ditch and an adjacent stone
culvert which replaced it.
