Monmouthshire Summary of 2002 projects
OLD SMITHY,
PORTSKEWETT, MONMOUTHSHIRE
NGR: ST 4986 8816
Six trenches were excavated to evaluate the
archaeological potential of a proposed development site
in an area postulated as a residence of Harold Godwinson.
These revealed a wall footing and two ditches dated by
ceramics to no later than the end of the twelfth century
AD. A third ditch was demonstrated by stratigraphic
relationships to be considerably earlier. In the western
part of the site a ditch of unknown date was located.
Other minor features were also found, some of which were
of a post-medieval date, others may relate to the
medieval activity. The evaluation also contributed to the
understanding of the topography of the immediate area,
which is dominated by an infilled tidal creek.

AGINCOURT SCHOOL, DIXTON LANE, MONMOUTH
NGR: SO 520 136
The construction of flood defences comprising a
continuous earth bund running around three sides of the
schoolhouse and outbuildings required the prior removal
of 0.25-0.3m of topsoil from below the entire footprint
of the bund. No features of any archaeological
significance were exposed. Archaeological deposits or
features could exist at a deeper level.
The property lies adjacent to the site of a medieval
church (since remodelled). An earthwork, probably a
burial mound of prehistoric date, lies c. 150m to the
north-west.
