For the majority of archaeological work dating is done by the study of the form and type of objects, such as pottery and flint implements, found during the site work. If the dating is not secure it is possible to use a range of scientific techniques to refine the chronology of a site:

- Radiocarbon dating
- Thermoluminescence
- Archaeomagnetism
- Dendrochronology
