A written scheme of investigation, also known as a "specification", "project proposal" or "project design" is the formal document detailing the method statement for the programme of archaeological work and provides the contractural basis for the work.

A written scheme of investigation can be prepared either in response to requirements of the relevant Local Planning Authority's Archaeological Advisor or in advance of the setting of a brief for work. It will normally include information on:

- Background to the development
- Background to the archaeology
- Scope of the project
- Aims of the project
