Archaeological landscape survey is the study of the impact of man on the visible landscape. An overview can be based on documentary sources, including aerial photographs, and a walkover of the site. More detailed information can be achieved by contour survey, earthwork survey and interpretation, or full topographic survey of existing features and land use. Surveys can be tied in to a local grid, the Ordnance Survey grid or both.

Various techniques may be used to characterise the landscape to the required level, providing CAD-based maps if needed:

- Desk based research
- Site walkover
- Total station (computerised theodolite)
- GPS
- Plane table
- Photographic survey
