Various survey techniques can be used to investigate the nature of archaeological remains without the need for excavation. They are most commonly used as part of an evaluation phase, to identify areas of particular archaeological sensitivity.

These instrument-based specialist services can be dependent on local geological conditions and past land use and are not suitable for all sites.

Survey techniques include:

- Resistivity survey
- Fluxgate gradiometer survey
- Magnetic susceptibility
- Ground probing radar survey
