Watching briefs are carried out on sites which are thought to have some archaeological potential, but where there is some uncertainty as to the level of that potential. Watching briefs consist of the presence of archaeological staff on site during groundworks to observe and record any archaeological deposits or features which may be present. In the event that significant remains are encountered it is usual for there to be a contingency for a phase of excavation. The potential for waiting time in the groundworks programme, which the archaeological contingency implies, should always be defined in the groundworks contractors' schedule.
