Desk based assessments may be carried out as an initial survey of the archaeological potential of an area or as part of a wider programme of archaeological works.

The locations searched and sources consulted will vary according to the particular project. Searches of local Sites and Monuments Records, Record Offices, libraries, museums and client records are the commonest repositories used.

Typical sources which are sought are:

- Sites and Monuments Records
- Listed building records
- Scheduled Ancient Monument records
- Ordnance Survey maps
- Tithe maps, Estate maps and other historical maps
- Geological maps
- Aerial photographs
- Borehole and other engineering data
- Archaeological reports and archives
- Census information
- Architects records
- Oral history
